Young driver on phone goes straight instead of left when bicyclist had crosswalk signal

Type

Passed really closely
Injury: No

What happened

Roadway description: Crosswalk

Your story: I was crossing Lake Shore Drive at the intersection with Jackson Boulevard.¬†When I got halfway to through the intersection on my bike, a driver whom was supposed to turn left onto Jackson Boulevard decided to continue straight onto LSD through the red light and into my crosswalk. The early 20’s girl was on the phone too. I caught up to her and her excuse was… “I am new to the city” I told her if I didn’t have disc breaks then she would have killed me.

Suggested improvements: Submitter didn’t provide

Livery driver pulls out of parking space without looking, swerves into bicyclist

Type

Other, swerved into
Injury: No

What happened

Roadway description: No bicycle markings

Your story: I was headed East on the Inner Drive (east of Michigan, along the Oak Street curve, north of Walton) when the driver of Livery Car license 8929 pulled off the curb, directly into my path. I had to come off my bicycle to avoid hitting the car.

Suggested improvements: Better driver education about yielding the right of way to cyclists in the road.

Bicyclist left hooked by driver illegally crossing lanes to get onto LSD

Type

Right hook (car turned right, across your path)
Injury: No

What happened

Roadway description: No bicycle markings

Your story: I was going east on Wilson to get to the Lakefront path. There are two lanes in each direction the block before the onramps to Lake Shore Drive. A driver in the left lane, without signaling, turned right across my path (I was the “first in line” at the light at Sheridan), to get onto southbound Lake Shore Drive.

Suggested improvements:

Either:

  1. Install stop signs at exits to force drivers to slow down instead of speed up to ramp,
  2. Lower turn radius onto on-ramps so drivers can’t enter them so quickly,
  3. Install a bike lane with markings “to lakefront” and mark the roadway lane so the left driving lane prohibits turning right onto the ramp (least helpful)

Driver exiting LSD sees bicyclist but turns right across their path anyway

Injury: No

What happened

Roadway description: No bicycle markings

Your story: Northbound on Lakefront Trail, a driver turning right from Lake Shore Drive exit ramp looked right at me, then made a right turn in front of me.

Suggested improvements: Signage, etc. perhaps motion or radar activated blinking lights? It could blink when something on the trail is traveling in excess of 15mph near the street crossing.

Driver doesn’t stop at intersection and bicyclist stops quickly to avoid collision on Inner Drive

Type

Other
Injury: No

What happened

Roadway description: No bicycle markings

Your story: I was headed north on the Inner Drive, alongside the park. I came to a foot-down stop at the intersection, where all northbound traffic must turn left. I signaled my left turn. The southbound driver who arrived at the intersection at the same time I did and I moved into the intersection at the same time. As I began my left turn onto Briar, the southbound driver behind the first car moved through the stop sign without stopping. I had to swerve and stop short to avoid the collision.

Suggested improvements: I don’t know. It was the driver who ignored the stop sign who needs improvement!
