Impatient driver speedily passes another in oncoming lane narrowly missing bicyclist

Location

651 S Wells St, Chicago, IL
2nd Ward, Bob Fioretti, soon to be 25th Ward, Danny Solis

Type

Had to stop abruptly

What happened

Traveling soutbound on S Wells St with blinking lights. The first vehicle was traveling northbound on Wells mid block at approximately 20mph. Second driver behind it thought that was to slow and swerved around first vehicle at a high rate of speed, greater than 35mph. As he swerved out it was directly at me. He missed me by about two feet. If it weren’t for my slight evade, I would have probably died and that’s not an exaggeration.

Suggested improvements

Traffic calming everywhere in the city, where roads encourage speeding.

Difficult to cross Wells’s 3 lanes of traffic to make left onto Illinois

Type

Passed closely

What happened

I just wanted to report a troublesome roadway design. Every morning riding in the Wells Street buffered bike lane, when it becomes one-way south after Erie. This is a far-right buffered bike lane with 3 travel lanes (far east turn lane). I try to turn left at Illinois to travel east and is ridiculous signaling across 3 lanes of fast moving traffic that has been getting anxious waiting for the long Ohio and Ontario lights.

Suggested improvements for this location: I think an actual bike light that gives cycles a few seconds to turn or continue south with possible green paint striping from Wells buffered lane to the East bound bike lane on Illinois. Once the Wells Street bridge is finished, definitely more bicycle traffic will be flowing through this intersection.

Two bicyclists get a right hook just before their light turns green

Type

Right hook (car turned right, across your path)
Injury: No

What happened

Roadway description: Bike lane (left of parking lane)

Your story: Heading southbound on Wells in the bike lane, stopped at a red light at North Avenue and Wells. As the crosswalk countdown timer (for people crossing Wells along North Avenue) approached zero, a silver Mercedes was pulled to the left of myself and another bicyclist and proceeded to turn right onto North Avenue in front of us as the light turned green.

Suggested improvements: There is currently not a right turn lane at this location and cars are often parked close to the intersection in order to go to Starbucks. Have also previously had drivers cut in front of me to turn right. Should be posted as “no right on red” at this intersection.

Driver fails to use turn signal, causing bicyclist to brake suddenly on Wells

Type

Right hook (car turned right, across your path)
Injury: No

What happened

Roadway description: Bike lane (left of parking lane)

Your story: About to cross North Avenue going southbound on Wells Street. Light turned green, two cars turning right in front of me. Parked cars on the right side of the street. Van without a turn signal turns right just in front of me and I have to use my front brake to slow down. No acknowledgement from the driver, no words exchanged.

Suggested improvements: [refreshed] bike lane markings, or a yield to bicycles sign could potentially help in this case.
